Remote Monitoring and Maintenance (RMM Service) is known by several other names such as remote management, network management, proactive monitoring, or remote monitoring software. It is the process of supervising and controlling IT systems (such as network devices, desktops, servers and mobile devices) by means of locally installed agents that reside on a customers infrastructure, and can be accessed by a MSP. The point of these tools is to monitor all activity that is happening at each server / workstation and provide information and analytics to the IT service provider as to resolve any issues that may arise.

Through RMM, technicians can remotely install software and updates, administer patches, and more – and this can often all be done from a single, unified dashboard. Technicians can administer tasks simultaneously to many computers at once, and no longer have to travel from office to office to handle routine maintenance. Functions include the ability to:

  • Track network and device health
  • Install new or updated software remotely (including patches, updates and configuration changes)
  • Detect new devices and automatically install the RMM agent and configure the device
  • Observe the behavior of the managed device and software for performance and diagnostic tasks
  • Perform alerting and provide reports and dashboards
  • IT automation and scripting
